How to Add a Watermark to a PDF on Android

A watermark is a quick way to mark a document's status before it goes anywhere — "Draft" while a contract is still being reviewed, "Confidential" before sharing internal numbers, or a sample stamp on a document being previewed publicly. Often the need comes up away from a desktop: a file lands in an email or a chat app and needs a stamp before you forward it, and going back to a computer just to do that isn't practical.

A watermark is also a lightweight way to mark ownership or origin on a document before it's shared publicly — a preview copy of a report, a sample page from a paid product, or a portfolio piece shared for feedback. It's not the same as a legal copyright notice, but a visible "Sample" or "Preview" label makes a document's status obvious at a glance, without anyone having to read a cover page first.

The tool exposes the same settings on a phone screen as it does on a laptop, just arranged for touch.

Open the Watermark PDF tool in Chrome or your default Android browser, then tap the upload area to bring up your device's file picker. Select your PDF from local storage, Google Drive, or another connected source — there's no account to create and no app to download first.

Enter your watermark text in the field provided. Text can be 1–120 characters using supported Latin characters. A live preview shows roughly how it will look on the page as you type.

Adjust opacity, angle, and position using the on-screen controls — each change updates the preview so you can see the result before committing to it. A common combination for a classic watermark look is a diagonal angle around -45 degrees with moderate opacity, centered on the page, though any combination works.

Decide whether the watermark applies to every page or only ones you select, then tap the action button to apply it.

The file is typically saved to your browser's Downloads location, although the exact location can vary by browser and Android version. From there it can be opened directly, shared to another app, or attached to an email the same way as any other downloaded file on the device.

If the watermark is too dark or too light, adjust the opacity slider until it's visible without overwhelming the page content underneath — there's no single correct value, since it depends on how much content is already on the page.

If you only want a watermark on some pages, switch from "all pages" to selected pages and choose exactly which ones need it.

If the text extends past the edge of the page, that usually means a long phrase combined with a large font size on a small page — try a shorter phrase or a smaller font size.

If the file won't select at all, confirm it's a genuine, non-encrypted PDF. Password-protected PDFs aren't supported by the watermark tool — unlock the file in a trusted app first, provided you have permission to modify it, then try the unprotected copy.

This tool adds watermarks — it doesn't detect or remove a watermark that's already in a PDF. If you need to remove an existing watermark, this isn't the right tool for that.
